The PCR TEST (Polymerase Chain Reaction

The PCR test is the most commonly used test at the GGD.

The corona PCR throat/nose swap test.

With this test, a test taker takes a sample of throat and nose mucus with a cotton swab. This sample is then send to the laboratory to see if the virus is present. The PCR test is extremely reliable and also shows small amounts of the genetic material of the coronavirus. Therefore, this corona test is considered the gold standard worldwide. However, the processing and analysis of the PCR test takes time.

The PCR test is:

  • Most used test by GGD;
  • Researched in a laboratory consortium approved by the RIVM for Sars-Cov-2 diagnostics
  • Including Travel Certificate

You should note that the result is based on a snapshot. In most cases the test result is very reliable. However, there is always a very small chance of a so-called ‘false positive’ result (result indicates infection even though you are not infected) or a ‘false negative’ result (result does not indicate infection, although you are infected). In addition, there is a small chance that the sample taken from you cannot be tested, for example due to recent oral use of medication, alcohol, mouthwashes and / or other contaminants in the mouth, throat and nose cavities. In this case, we will offer you a new test as soon as possible, and we will try to give you a result in time, without being able to give any guarantees for this. No test can completely rule out these false positive or false negative results. Your test result therefore does not offer 100% certainty whether you are infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus. For more information about the PCR test, see the website of the RIVM.
